What is the State Historic Resources Inventory?

The State Historic Resources Inventory (SHRI) is a list of resources, mostly buildings, which may be eligible for listing on the National Register of Historic Resources -- worthy of landmark status.  Berkeley’s SHRI was compiled by volunteers between 1977 – 1979. Each lisiting includes: address; date built; name of the resource where appropriate, for example, City Hall; name of architect and/or builder; a brief description of the property; and a code numer indicating its estimated importance. Berkeley's SHRI identified 669 resources, about 140 of them are now included among Berkeley’s 376 officially designated historic resources.

Measure LL gives official City recognition to the SHRI by presuming that the listed properties “have significant architectural, cultural, educational, historic or archaeological value.” This means that the Landmarks Preservation Commission will be notified when someone seeks an alteration or demolition permit related to the resource, and the LPC will have the opportunity to initiate designation procedures.
